Core Maths is a Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies, equivalent to an AS Level in terms of UCAS points. Core Maths builds on GCSE Maths, focused on problem-solving and interpretation of maths in the real world. Students will consider and tackle mathematics in meaningful contexts, including through financial applications and statistical ideas that can support work in other subjects.
Mathematics and Further Mathematics will continue to study familiar topics from GCSE; such as algebra and trigonometry, and you will also be introduced to new ones like calculus. Your study of maths will be divided up into two areas, Pure Maths and Applied Maths. There is no coursework, but a mathematical comprehension forms part of the assessment at A Level. Mathematical processes consisting of mathematical argument and language, problem solving and mathematical modelling are embedded throughout the AS and A Level courses.
Core maths – This course is particularly useful for students studying Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Business Studies, Biology, and Politics. Please note, this course is not suitable for students studying A Level Physics.
Mathematics and Further Mathematics combine will with most other A Levels.
I always enjoyed studying Maths at school and wanted to continue with it. My favourite part is the Pure Maths units, which have already exceeded my expectations. It has also been really useful for my other subjects.
